JECTIVE: To determine the feasibility of gathering Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) data directly from the patient via a computerized patient interview.DESIGN: A quantitative descriptive study was utilized to determine whether patients would be willing to self-report their CAM usage and whether the self-reported data complements clinicians perceptions and medical records.MEASUREMENTS: 40 patients were recruited to test the computerized patient interview application. Clinicians and staff (n=15) were also surveyed to determine their perceived CAM usage. In addition, a retrospective chart review (n=100) was done to estimate the documented CAM usage rate.RESULTS: In this study, we had a 85% participation rate, suggesting patients are willing to share their CAM use through the computer application. The self reported usage rate was 85%, as compared to the chart documented usage rate of 9.5% and the average clinician/staff estimated usage rate of 43%.
